Tributes have been pouring in on social media for an Uber Eats driver who was robbed and shot dead, allegedly while performing a delivery in Crossmoor last week.

The driver, identified as Jayseelan Naicker, 45, was reportedly robbed and fatally shot for his mobile phone.

According to reports from PT Alarms Armed Response, Blue Security, and Mzansi Securifire Armed Response, the victim, an Indian male, was delivering food when he was approached by two armed suspects. The suspects robbed him and shot him on the left-hand side of his body before fleeing towards the nearby informal settlement.

Claude Subramodey of Amawele Emergency Services said: “When paramedics arrived at the scene, they found the man lying on the pavement with gunshot wounds. Sadly, he had already succumbed to his injuries before we arrived. There was nothing more we could do for him, and he was declared deceased at the scene.

“Delivery drivers, especially those working at night, are extremely vulnerable. They risk their lives to earn an honest living. We urge the public to be mindful of their safety and for authorities to step up efforts to protect these essential workers.”

One of the heartfelt comments on Facebook, by Nazia Ally, read: “Absolutely devastating news. Jason (Jayseelan) was our go-to Uber driver. He was more like a brother. The most honest, hardworking, dedicated person we’ve met. He will be terribly missed by us all. Condolences to his family, my heart breaks for his little one.”
