Confusion over what career to pursue is a feeling many high school learners face. For Durban-born Muhammad Azeez, that uncertainty was a familiar companion — until he found his calling in civil engineering.

Today, Azeez holds a summa cum laude degree in Civil Engineering from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) and is currently working for top engineering consultancy Zutari, based in Pretoria, as part of their Water Unit (Dams and Hydropower team).

“Throughout my schooling years, I was always confused about what career to follow. It was my family who encouraged me to explore engineering, and civil engineering stood out because of its role in shaping cities — from roads and buildings to water systems. I knew it would allow me to contribute to improving our country’s infrastructure,” said Azeez.
Growing up in Durban, UKZN was a natural choice for his studies. Azeez credits a virtual open day hosted by UKZN’s College of Agriculture, Engineering and Science during the COVID-19 lockdown as the moment that solidified his decision.

Muhammad Azeez found his calling in civil engineering.

Over four years, Azeez explored a wide range of subjects, with a strong interest in fluid dynamics and structural engineering. He particularly enjoyed a module called Fluids 3, which delves into the flow of water in natural channels and rainfall analysis.

In his final year, Azeez completed a design project focused on building a water reservoir for the Westown development near Shongweni, applying his knowledge to real-world challenges. His research project explored the use of silver nanoparticles in cement mortar linings of water supply pipes, bridging civil engineering with microbiology and chemistry.
“I was fortunate to have amazing supervisors who guided me while also giving me space to discover solutions on my own, “he said.

Azeez plans to register as a professional engineer and hopes to pursue a master’s degree in the future, saying he has developed a deep passion for research.
He expressed gratitude to his lecturers, friends, and extended family for their support throughout his studies. “Having a strong support system really helped me cope with the pressure,” he added.

When he’s not solving complex engineering problems, Azeez enjoys relaxing with a good book or building Lego creations — “Yes, Lego is for adults too, he laughed.”
His story is a powerful reminder that uncertainty can lead to clarity, especially when supported by the right people and driven by a passion to make a difference.
