A Cornubia family is mourning the tragic death of their breadwinner, who was fatally struck by a vehicle when he and his friends attempted to flee from knife-wielding robbers on the R102 between Palmview robots and the Phoenix off-ramp on Friday evening.
Emergency services, law enforcement units, and security personnel rushed to the scene of the deadly crash, where the victim lay on the roadway.
KZNVIP Protection quickly arrived on site, and spokesperson Gareth Naidoo said: “Shortly after the fatal accident, distraught community members from Cornubia arrived, many visibly shaken and some armed with pangas and other objects. They reported that the victim, a local breadwinner, had been walking home from work with others when three unidentified African male suspects attempted to rob them. In a desperate attempt to flee, the group ran across the roadway. Tragically, one of the victims was struck by an oncoming vehicle and killed.”

“Residents of Cornubia are now calling for immediate intervention from police and municipal authorities. They cite persistent issues such as overgrown bushes, lack of lighting, and regular attacks on workers commuting through the area as conditions that have created a daily environment of fear and danger,” Naidoo said.
Family members of the deceased remain in deep mourning, struggling to come to terms with the sudden and tragic loss of their loved one. The incident caused major traffic disruptions as the roadway was obstructed. KZN VIP Ambulance services, Metro Police, and SAPS attended the scene.
“We urge members of the community to take cognisance of lurking suspects who are ruthless and ready to pounce on unsuspecting victims on roadways, especially those on foot. Be mindful of dangerous routes and consider the consequences before embarking on any travel,” Naidoo said.
