What began as a simple idea to knit squares for a Mandela Day blanket has blossomed into a heartwarming mission — and it’s only just getting started. Less than two weeks ago, 11 elderly women united by a love of knitting and a shared desire to give back came together to create something beautiful. What started with squares for a community blanket has quickly grown into something even more meaningful: knitting beanies and gloves for children in need.

These lovingly crafted winter warmers will soon be delivered to underprivileged schools and children’s homes — just in time for the winter chill.

Lorna Calder, one of the spirited knitters, says the group gathers during lunch breaks to knit side by side, swapping stories, laughter, and a sense of purpose.
“It brings us joy because we’re doing something we love, and at the same time, we’re helping those who need it most,” said Calder. “There’s nothing more rewarding.”

The women’s dedication is already sparking inspiration throughout the community, but Calder says more support is needed. She’s calling on the community, businesses and schools to donate double knitting wool to help the project grow and warm even more little hands and heads.

“With just a little more help, we can reach so many more children this winter,” she said.
As their needles click in harmony and their conversations flow, these remarkable women are weaving far more than wool — they’re stitching together a legacy of kindness, connection, and care.

And there’s more excitement in the air at Mothwa Haven. Alongside their charitable efforts, the residents are buzzing with anticipation for the upcoming Glamorous Gran pageant, set to dazzle on 9 May.

The annual event celebrates the beauty, wisdom, and sparkle of older women, and this year promises to be unforgettable. With elegance, confidence, and a healthy dose of glitz, the ladies of Mothwa are ready to take the spotlight in front of family, friends, and fellow golden girls.

“We believe beauty knows no age,” said one of the organisers. “Glamorous Gran isn’t just about appearances — it’s about honouring the confidence, character, and incredible life stories of our elders.”

Mothwa Haven is inviting retirement homes in the area to join the fun and enter their own contestants, in a spirit of unity, friendship, and joyful celebration.
The ladies will enjoy a red carpet experience complete with music, sashes, and a panel of cheerful judges. And while there will be titles awarded, the true magic lies in honouring every woman who walks that stage.

Between their knitting needles and their pageant preparations, the women of Mothwa Haven are showing that age is no barrier to passion, purpose, or a little glamour.
