Demolition of China Emporium making progress

The demolition of the China Emporium, located on Dr Pixley KaSeme Street in the Durban CBD, is progressing steadily, although the process has taken longer than initially expected. The delay is largely due to the manual demolition method being employed, as the building is situated near neighbouring structures, making the use of heavy machinery impractical and risky.

The once-prominent multi-storey building, which was severely damaged by a fire two years ago, has now been reduced to a pile of rubble, with only a small section of the structure remaining. The fire left the building unstable and unsafe for occupancy, necessitating controlled demolition to prevent any potential hazards to the surrounding area.

The progress of demolitions

Due to safety concerns, the city’s engineering and safety teams have opted for a meticulous approach, ensuring that no damage is done to the surrounding infrastructure. The demolition crew is working around the clock to complete the task while ensuring the safety of nearby businesses and pedestrians.

As a result of the ongoing work, Brooke Street remains closed to traffic. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes that have been clearly marked. Road closures and diversions are being enforced to minimise traffic disruptions, with the city’s traffic department coordinating the flow of vehicles in the surrounding areas.

The City apologises for the inconvenience caused by the extended closure of Brooke Street but assures the public that the demolition is necessary for the safety of the community. Once the remaining section of the building is demolished and the rubble cleared, the area will be reopened for normal traffic flow.

The City urges the public to remain patient during this process and thanks everyone for their cooperation.
