Green Buddies Environmental Club (GBEC) is embracing the turn of the season with two new awareness events, a Water Week competition and an Arbour Week carnival.
The Water Week competition will take place on Saturday, 31 August, from 1pm to 3pm at Hirsch’s uMhlanga. The competition will showcase the creativity and innovation of young learners as they present posters focused on water conservation and sustainability.

“The top 25 posters will be displayed, and the finalists will be recognised for their outstanding contributions to environmental education. The event is expected to be a vibrant celebration of young talent and a platform for raising awareness about the importance of water conservation,” said GBEC chairperson, Ashlin Ellan.
Thereafter on Sunday, 1 September, the club will host an Arbour Week carnival at Avoca Primary School, 20 Pommern Lane, from 9am to 4pm. The carnival will kick off Arbour Week with a day full of engaging activities, including educational workshops, environmental exhibitions, and the highlight of the day – the Tree of Life Ceremony. This event will also mark the beginning of a week-long initiative where learners at Avoca Primary School will learn about different aspects of trees and the environment. The carnival will conclude with the creation of a vegetable garden, a sustainable project that will support the school’s nutrition programme.
“Both events underscore Green Buddies Environmental Club’s commitment to fostering environmental awareness and community involvement. The club invites the public to join these celebrations, support the young learners, and contribute to the collective efforts in environmental conservation,” added Ellan.
