The Verulam Football Association recently celebrated ending yet another challenging but successful season by hosting an awards day at the Verulam Recreational Grounds on Sunday, 5 December.
Under the leadership of the president of the association, Martha Narainsamy, the best teams in each division were presented with medals and trophies for their outstanding performance. The highlight of the presentation was the declaration of the players of the year in the junior and senior sections. Respectively, this was Thabiso Mfeka and Proteus Gina.
The Premier League winners were the Classic Football Club who walked away with R5 000 prize money and a promotion to the SAFA eThekwini Regional League. The division one winners were Trenance Park United and the division one cup winners were Verulam Pirates. The event was dedicated to late Verulam football stalwart, Owen Govender.
Narainsamy, who places much emphasis on sport and community involvement, said the last two years were very challenging due to the pandemic and the restrictions imposed but was hopeful that the next season would prove to be an even greater success. “I would like to thank all involved for having faith and supporting me throughout the year,” said Narainsamy.
He also complimented his executive committee on a job well done and said he hoped to see them hale and hearty in the new year. Officials and guests present expressed their well wishes for the teams and coaches for a restful festive season and congratulated them for the role they played in ensuring the 2021 season was a success.
Keynote speaker, Mazwi Mkhize of the SAFA Interim Committee, acknowledged the work done by Narainsamy to keep the Verulam Football Association’s flag flying high since taking over the reins of the association three years ago. “Narainsamy has done a commendable job. His role in the youth development programme has encouraged many of the community’s youth to take up sport. It is great to see how much football has helped them grow their character and fitness.”
