A Newlands East man who said the community has been waiting a long time for the maintenance of speed humps has used money from his pocket to buy paint and brushes to re-paint a non-visible speed hump on John Dory Drive.
Chris Parker, who works at a sound shop in Newlands East, said he decided to re-paint a speed hump on John Dory Drive as he has witnessed cars being damaged due to drivers not seeing the hump, during the day and at night. “Every day I witness drivers missing the hump as it is not painted and this causes damage to their cars, and could also cause injuries to the occupants of the vehicle. I took it upon myself to buy paint and a brush, and I re-painted the hump in order to help motorists driving in the area,” said Parker. Parker said he is willing to re-paint more speed humps in the area as the eThekwini Municipality is taking too long to attend to the maintenance and re-painting of speed humps in his community. “If I could, I would re-paint all the humps in the area but I don’t have the financial means. If I had money, I would buy more paint and re-paint all the non-visible humps but I cannot afford to, which is why I am appealing to residents who can donate paint to do so, we can do our good deed for the community,” said Parker.
Resident, Leigh Rosemary Smith, said as community members they appreciate what Parker has done for the community. “He used money from his pocket to buy paint and brushes, and also used his precious time and re-painted the speed hump which was non-visible on John Dory Drive. We need more people like him in our society. We are proud of you, Mr Parker. May more men and women take similar initiatives to help upgrade their communities,” said Smith. Community liaison officer for the Newlands East Watch Community Safety (NEWCS), Joanne Ryan, said they appreciate the work done by Parker. “This job should be done by the municipality’s Roads Department and they should also come to the party in maintaining the speed humps in our community. On behalf of the community of Newlands East, we thank Mr Parker for taking the initiative, we pray and hope that the Roads Department could come back and re-paint other humps and complete the job in order to eliminate accidents from occurring in the area,” said Ryan.
