Covid-19 places uThukela District under pressure

The uThukela District Municipality says it is striving to provide clean portable water to its communities even though the Covid-19 pandemic has placed its core function under unexpected pressure. 

The Municipality has proposed a tariff increase of 6% for water and sanitation. In his presentation when tabling the draft budget to the various communities visited, Mayor Siphiwe Mazibuko mainly gave a positive forecast and said that when preparing this year’s budget they were mindful of the current economy, and the rising costs of electricity and fuel. He said that is why there is an operational budget to cover the costs of the municipality as there is a need to focus on delivering the services as intended such as the following: Kwanobama Ezitendeni-Weenen – Water supply package plant project and sanitation projects. Colenso – Upgrade of Colenso Water Treatment Works  Fitty Park – Completion of Fitty Park water reticulation Ekuvukeni Ongoing upgrading of the Oliphantskop Water Treatment Works  Ezakheni Ezakheni WCD and AC pipe replacement

Bergville Phase 2 ongoing sanitation project Upgrading Langkloof water treatment works; Upgrading of Bergville water treatment works and regional bulk water supply Phase1 Okhahlamba wards 2, 3 and 14 regional bulk water supply reticulation network The municipality has concluded the municipal public consultation meetings on the Draft 2021/22 Integrated Development Plan (IDP) and Budget. The IDP is the five-year strategic plan that is revised annually in order to gain insight to changes and adapt its plan accordingly to the newly revised IDP and compiled in accordance with the Local Government Municipal Acts. From here on, all inputs received will be consolidated for consideration by various IDP and Budget committees before being tabled to the Mayoral Committee and finally before Council for adoption. All these processes  are scheduled to take place before end of June 2021.
