Two separate incidents of a fatal stabbing and a shootout in the Wentworth area on Monday, left one man deceased, one shot and two suspects arrested.

In the stabbing incident, two men are alleged to have been embroiled in a dispute on Alabama Road, when the brawl heated up and blood was shed.

Wentworth SAPS communications officer, Cpt MP Gumede, said, “A 23-year-old man pulled out a knife and is alleged to have chased a 20-year-old male who then produced an Okapi knife and stabbed his pursuer on his chest. A witness from across the road rushed to the scene to assist the stabbed man who bled excessively. A passing motorist is alleged to have stopped her bakkie and transported the stabbed man to Wentworth Hospital where he died upon arrival.”

“The 20-year-old was arrested on a charge of murder and the knife used in the stabbing was seized. All relevant authorities responded to the scene and an investigation is underway at Wentworth SAPS,” added Cpt Gumede.
Meanwhile, violence broke out at the flats on Major Calvert Street a few roads away from Alabama Road just minutes after the deadly stabbing occurred.

According to Cpt Gumede, both incidents appear to be related. “Members of Crime Prevention were patrolling when they received a complaint of a shooting from an informant. When the members arrived at the scene, they saw a group of flat residents shouting and directing the police to the scene behind Major Calvert flats. A man was lying on the floor with a gunshot wound to his right thigh, he was unconscious and bleeding extensively.

“One empty cartridge was found next to the victim, and few metres away a live 9. 9mm ammunition was found. An ambulance arrived on scene to transport the shot victim to Wentworth Hospital whilst police combed the site for evidence. Four other empty cartridges were found on Hime Street along the road side. A 24-year-old suspect was arrested at 1.30pm by the Operation Fiela members following the shooting at 12:30. Wentworth Crime Prevention and the detectives recovered from the suspectís possession, a Glock pistol, one 9mm magazine with 15 live ammunition, five hollow point live ammunition, one magazine containing 16 live ammunition, a black holster and a firearm license,” said Cpt Gumede. An attempted murder case is under investigation.

Reports indicate that the gunman opened fire on a group of people gathered including children who were playing outside. An individual from the group fired back. A vehicle was sprayed with bullets during the gun-battle.
Police are urging witnesses to assist police in ensuring that those involved in the reported incidents are identified and brought to book.
