A Tongaat taxi boss and a member of Dolphin Coast Taxi Association, Dicky Govender, and his wife Saroj were killed in a drive-by shooting near Frasers in Tongaat on Sunday evening.

Govender succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while his school teacher wife Saroj died later in hospital.
Tongaat police communications officer Captain Patrick Ngwane confirmed the incident saying that the reason for the shooting remains unknown. “Police are working around the clock to arrest the perpetrators of this crime,” said Ngwane.

The couple left Shakaskraal and were travelling to Tongaat. As they approached Frasers the occupants of an unknown vehicle opened fire on their Hyundai Tucson with 9mm handguns and high calibre rifles, according to Ngwane.

The bullet-riddled vehicle veered off the road and came to a stop in the sugar cane plantation.
