Details remain sketchy, but it is believed that a 44-year-old man leaped off a bridge along in the Rookdale, Bergville area.

“It is alleged that man had jumped off the bridge into the water, he swam a little and then just disappeared,” said officials on the scene, who continue searching for the man.

Okhahlamba Superintendent Fred Halgreen searched the waters by boat, while K9 Search and Rescue Warrant-Officer Jacques Meyer and Emma searched the banks. “The water is incredibly cold and if the man drowned, it might take a few days for the body to surface,” said Meyer to family members who joined the search.

At the time of going to press, the search for the man was continuing with reports that divers from Newcastle would join the search.
