Pravesh Premchand (42), youngest son of Premchand Ragunath, spoke to The Phoenix Tabloid about his dad who was found with a fatal stab wound to his neck on Thursday in Ormford, Sunford.
Pravesh’s 73-year-old mum, Deomathie, who allegedly has a history of dementia, sustained superficial injuries and was reportedly found in a disoriented state in the bathroom at the time. Phoenix SAPS communications officer, Cpt L Naidoo said, “Members of SAPS Phoenix responded to a complaint of a suicide in Ormford Road, Sunford area. Upon their arrival at the scene, members proceeded into the house where they found blood on the floor and an elderly man lying in a pool of blood in the passage. The members then interviewed a man who alleged that he is the son of the deceased.”
“According to the son, he alleged that he had arrived at his father’s house with some items. He added that he knocked on the door and there was no response. He then proceeded to the kitchen door and found that the door and gate were unlocked. Upon entering the premises, he found his father lying in the bloodied state. He then contacted the necessary authorities and reported the matter. The 78-year-old man was declared dead at the scene. The 73-year-old wife of the deceased was in a state of shock and had superficial injuries on her neck. It is further alleged that the deceased wife suffers from Dementia. She was taken to hospital for treatment. A case of Murder is being investigated,” said Cpt Naidoo.
It has been alleged that there were no indication of robbery or theft of any items.
Corroborating the information from the police, Glen Naidoo, of KZN VIP, who attended the scene, said Ragunath was stabbed in the neck and the mother had a superficial wound. “The elderly lady was incoherent and disorientated and could not give any details of what had transpired. There were two knives with their blades bent on the floor outside the back door. It did not appear as if anything was taken from the house,” Naidoo said.
Pravesh said, “We are still processing this devastating news. To lose a parent under such circumstances is unfathomable. We are reeling from this horrific tragedy. My dad was a humble soul. He was well-known in the Unit 15 area. A friendly face to all who encountered him. My mum has been discharged from hospital and is still unwell. We are trying to make sense of all that has occurred as we grieve for my dad.”
Phoenix CPF chairman, Umesh Singh, said, “This mysterious murder has rocked the Phoenix community. We are distressed by the death of
Mr Premchand. We are placing our faith in police that they will uncover the truth behind his murder. Our condolences go out to the bereaved family at this time.”
