“The Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital Board (MGMH) will leave no stone unturned in our quest to uncover the truth behind the horrific find of a ‘mummified’ body in the equipment room at the hospital.”
MGMH board member and community activist, Mervin Reddy, told the Phoenix Tabloid that he is appalled to have heard of the grisly discovery made by a four-year-old child at the local medical facility, recently.
According to Reddy, the veracity of the incident cannot be disputed and an official probe into the matter has been launched. “I am awaiting to meet with the complainant to further discuss this matter,” said Reddy.
Reddy said he was given to understand that a child had been seated on the shoulders of an adult when she peeked in the equipment room as they were pacing and saw the shocking sight.
“The child informed the adult who had been carrying her of the ghastly sight and he explored further. That’s when he apparently saw the body wrapped in plastic and lying on the bed.
The feet were said to be exposed from the ankles and the toes appeared to have been decomposed,” Reddy added.
According to him, it was reported that staff at the hospital failed to assist the complainant and provide more clarity about the presence of the body in the equipment room. Reddy said he was deeply disappointed that the matter could have allegedly been brushed off so callously by staff at the hospital.
“When I was informed of the incident, I immediately pledged that a full investigation will be conducted. This is an unfortunate incident that never should have happened. Why it did, is cause for concern? A child has been affected by this situation. We will provide counselling for the little child if required to help her process the events of what unfolded. The investigation will determine who is responsible for this catastrophic incident and the person will be disciplined accordingly. Why that body was stored in that place and in that way, are questions that beg answers,” said Reddy.
He added, “MGMH is facing many challenges but incidents of this nature will not be tolerated. We strive to be transparent and ensure that living patients and those deceased are treated with the respect due to them. The public must know that this matter is under scrutiny and will be fully investigated until answers are wrought.”
The Phoenix Tabloid contacted the Department of Health for comment but none was forthcoming at the time of going to print.
