The little girl who lost her life

A nine-year old girl has lost her life following a botched hijacking on Caucus Street in Shallcross.

The father was dropping off his daughter at a school at Himalaya Road, Shallcross when three suspects accosted him, depriving him of his motor vehicle, a Grey IX35.
Captain Cheryl Pillay, communications officer of the eThekwini inner south cluster said the suspects fled with the child in the vehicle. Along Caucus Street in Shallcross, the suspects lost control of the vehicle.

“An off-duty police officer gave chase and apprehended one suspect.  The second suspect is deceased. The 9-year old child was taken to Chatsmed Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. At this stage one suspect is at large,” said Pillay.

Resident from the area, Zahara Khan said, “Honestly it’s very tragic and unexpected. Due to crime, innocent lives have been consumed. My condolences to the family.”
Shallcross CPF Chairman, Mahendra Lillkan said they will try and arrange patrols in the mornings due to the increase in criminal activities.

“It’s a tragic loss. The community is up in arms about the incident. As the CPF team we are going to try and get patrols out in the morning because it seems like that’s when criminal activities are high. Sincere condolences to the family from the Shallcross CPF, said Lillkan.
