A night out for two cousins ended in tragedy after they were mowed down by two vehicles in separate incidents at the old Trade Centre off-ramp in Phoenix, during the early hours of Sunday morning.
Nigel (17), of Courtstone and Bradley of Berrystone, (24), were in the company of a third friend and were strolling home when the deadly accidents occurred leaving their mothers, two sisters, heartbroken in the wake of their deaths. Northmead Secondary Grade 11 learner, Nigel, died on scene whilst Bradley died on arrival at hospital.
Speaking to the Phoenix Tabloid, a friend of the family who wished to remain anonymous, said the three young men had travelled via Uber to Gateway to support one of their friends who was deejaying at a venue there.
The group then decided to walk back home when tragedy struck.
Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) responded to the scene at approximately 3:06am after receiving multiple calls from the public reporting the incident.
“Upon arrival, paramedics assessed the teenager and found that he was fatally injured after he was run over by a Mercedes Benz. His 24-year-old relative was seriously injured following a hit and run which occurred shortly after the first incident.
He was stabilised on scene before being transported to Mahatma Gandhi Hospital in a serious condition. We later learned that he succumbed to his injuries and passed on as well,” said RUSA boss, Prem Balram.
“It is alleged that the three friends had left the Gateway Shopping Mall in Umhlanga and were returning to their home on Berrystone Place in Phoenix when the teenager was run over. His relative ran for help when he was struck by an unknown vehicle which fled the scene,” Balram added.
The family friend said, “It is devastating that these families had to lose two loved ones at
one go. Both boys were good respectful young men. Bradley loved cars and worked hard so
he could purchase himself a car recently. Two sisters are mourning their sons. Their friend who witnessed the horrific crashes is deeply affected by their deaths which occurred before his eyes. It is believed that Bradley covered Nigel with his shirt and then ran for help when he was rammed by a hit and run driver. This is a calamity beyond words.”
Both young men were laid to rest on Monday. Police are investigating further.
