A suspected con artist is operating in the Verulam CBD. It is alleged that the suspect approached a coupled, aged 69 and 79 respectively, at a supermarket in Wick St last Friday telling them that their son had asked him to hand a laptop to them.
The suspect, who knew their son’s name, convinced the couple to accompany him to the Verulam Clinic, where he robbed them.
Reaction Unit South Africa’s Prem Balram said that they were contacted by a resident from Inanda requesting help for the couple.
“The victims drove the suspect to the clinic and the elderly woman entered the medical facility with him. As they walked down a quiet corridor the suspect demanded the elderly woman’s valuables,” said Balram. “She handed over nearly R2000 in cash, a gold chain, her wedding rings and four gold bangles. He then fled on foot leaving the elderly woman in a state of shock but uninjured.”
According to Balram, the suspect has a tattoo of a star on his left cheek. “His picture was extracted from CCTV footage at the supermarket where he had accosted the elderly couple.
“It is also alleged that the suspect is a drug user and may be living on the streets in Verulam. However this information could not be confirmed,” said Balram.
