One suspect has been arrested while five others are still at large in a brazen armed robbery that took place shortly after 9am this morning (5 October).
Six men entered the MTN store on Harding Street pretending to be customers purchasing airtime.
“The suspects then produced firearms and held up the staff and customers inside,” said Newcastle SAPS Communications officer Captain Ncube, speaking to the Newcastle Express at the scene which was teeming with SAPS.
According to Ithemba Security Manager, Andre Potgieter, they received a signal from the store after a staff member pressed the panic button.
“Two response guards went to the store while the robbery was in progress and interrupted the armed suspects who left all of the cell phones behind and then fled the store by breaking a glass door at the side of the shop.”
Through the combined efforts of Ithemba Security guards and plain clothes SAP officers who were in the vicinity of the robbery, one suspect was apprehended and a firearm recovered.
“The suspect is a 31-year-old South African who has told police he is from Johannesburg,” revealed Captain Ncube. He added that the suspects had made off with an undisclosed amount of cash and jewellery which had been taken off a customer.
According to a source at the scene the getaway vehicle was enroute to Johannesburg where it is being tracked.
