Thirteen people suffered minor to serious injuries after the Toyota Quantum that they were travelling in crashed in the parking lot of Shoprite on Ireland St in Verulam on Monday morning.

Members of Reaction Unit South Africa and Netcare 911 responded to reports of a “very serious” crash. On arrival the injured were treated by paramedics from several private ambulance services before being transported to the Mahatma Gandhi and Osindisweni hospitals.

“It was alleged that the taxi was traveling at high speed down Ireland Street when the brakes on the vehicle failed,” said Reaction Unit South Africa’s Prem Balram.

“In an attempt to slow the vehicle down the driver attempted to turn into Todd Street. The vehicle knocked into the pavement, flew over the metal barrier and landed in the parking lot several meters below road level.”

The passengers in the taxi were residents of Phoenix and were traveling to work in Verulam when the accident occurred.
